Chapter 10

Megan eventually gave us a lead, but it was a tricky one. There was a party, of sorts, that a lot of local witches were going to. The problem was it was out of the city and walking in with a vampire was hardly inconspicuous.

We could go and stay hidden. So long as she wasn’t a necromancer, she wouldn’t know we were there. But if she was one, could we get away before she took us over? Corbin was less concerned.

“This isn’t my first necromancer hunt,” he said, climbing onto his motorcycle back at my house. “She won’t have a clue we’re there, unless you give us away. They have a radius. All we have to do is stay out of it.”

“And you will be able to tell from that distance?”

“Sure,” he said, though I didn’t quite believe him.

“Should we get Holden to come along?”

Corbin rolled his neck. “Do you really want to deal with him if the necromancer takes him over?”

Excellent point. Then again, I didn’t much want to deal with Corbin if she took him over either. “Okay, let’s do this.” I climbed on behind him and put my arms around his waist.

He took off at full speed, taking my breath away. The wind rushed through my hair and buffeted my body. I slowly let go of him. It almost felt like I was flying. My problems streamed from my mind as the air whipped around me. I closed my eyes and held out my arms.

“Are you sure you want to stay here?” he shouted over the wind.

“Yes,” I shouted back.

“It’s for the priest, isn’t it? It won’t turn out for the best.”

“Not just him,” I shouted back. If there was a passage, something I was feeling less and less certain about, this was where it would be. In Chicago. Definitely not in New Orleans. “This is my home. I’ll get over him without uprooting my life,” I shouted back. “I’m sick of starting over.”

That was the end of our conversation. Corbin parked the motorcycle a couple miles back from where Megan said the party was.

“Sure your friends aren’t setting us up?”

“Positive.” I trusted both Megan and Stephanie. They might not like what Corbin was planning, but they wouldn’t knowingly put me at risk.

“Then I guess we’re going for a run. Stay close and be as quiet as possible.” He started off almost faster than I could keep up with, but I managed—though nowhere near as silently as him.

Maybe spending more time with vampires wouldn’t be all bad. Baker helped me learn how to erase memories. What could Corbin teach me? Also, I wasn’t going to age. I could stay here for a while, but eventually people would notice and I would have to go. Why not New Orleans? Hopefully by that time, I’d be back in my world and Phoenix would go with me. But even if that didn’t happen, I would be okay. Corbin had more to offer in terms of teaching me what I could or couldn’t do than anyone else.
